Michel Sorel appointed as DUNE Physics Co-coordinator

Michel Sorel, Co-Principal Investigator of the experimental neutrino group at IFIC, has been appointed Physics Co-coordinator of the DUNE collaboration, one of the most ambitious international projects in particle physics.

In this role, Sorel will help lead the definition and coordination of the experiment’s physics program, working closely with an extensive international collaboration to maximize DUNE’s scientific output. The experiment is expected to play a key role in advancing our understanding of neutrino properties, including CP violation in the lepton sector, neutrino mass ordering, and the broader question of matter–antimatter asymmetry in the Universe.

Sorel succeeds Inés Gil Botella (CIEMAT), who has served as Physics Co-coordinator for the past four years. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping the collaboration’s scientific strategy and preparing the ground for the next phase of the experiment. Sorel joins Chris Marshall (U. of Rochester), who continues as Physics Co-coordinator.

This appointment represents an important recognition of both Sorel’s scientific trajectory and IFIC’s leading role within the global neutrino physics community. It also reinforces the strong presence of Spanish institutions in the DUNE collaboration.
